For its 9th year, a stunning night of fabulous fashion, fine dining, glorious wine and sensational heavenly performances will all meld to make STYLEAID HEAVEN, the best STYLEAID ever!
This exceptional evening was conceived to raise much needed funds to assist in the education, prevention, care and support aims and objectives of the Western Australian AIDS Council.
On Friday August 4 2006, STYLEAID will weave its magical spell over 650 lucky people who have purchased tickets to support the WA AIDS Council in a night that celebrates all things great in WA Fashion.
Returning to the stunning ballroom at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre STYLEAID will again bring Perth glitterati and supporters of the WA AIDS Council together for the night of nights on the Perth fundraising social calendar.
STYLEAID is Perth’s opportunity to join the worldwide force of fashion fundraisers fighting HIV and AIDS. STYLEAID is a global fashion event originating on the west coast of the US seventeen years ago and making its Australian debut fourteen years ago in Melbourne.
STYLEAID JOY in 2005 was heralded as one of the most memorable gala events of the year’s fundraising social calendar and the best STYLEAID to date! Both local and national media reported on the evening declaring STYLEAID an overwhelming success. Highlights included the opening ballroom inspired showstopper with the team from TMG productions featuring Tania McGuinness, Darryl Davenport and David Tinizzo, followed by the stunning vocal talents of the cast of the Yellow Glass Theatre Company production of RENT and hosted by the amazing fashionassassin himself Alex Zabotto-Bentley.
The parade, on 2 specially designed crab like catwalks, featuring 8 of WA’s top designers and four of Perth’s new emerging designers.
Including perennial favourite Ruth Tarvydas and featuring the first Perth showcase of the new couture range from Aurelio Costarella along with designs from the spring/summer collections from WA Designer of the Year ae’lkemi, Ruff clothing, su design, Sauce swimwear, Story by Tang and the stunning collection of both men’s and womenswear from the talented team of ericaamerica.
Four new designers picked from a field of talented young hopefuls also had the opportunity to show parts of their new collections, thus giving them an invaluable entrée into the world of group fashion parades. E YRE, Truly Designs, Preacher and Mercedes Start Up winner One Fell Swoop delighted those in attendance with their range of different looks for the new season.
With the incomparable skills of stylist Aly May to ensure that once again the STYLEAID parade was filled with cutting edge glamour and style, the makeup and hair teams headed by Carol Mackie from M.A.C and Paul McClurg from Paul McClurg for Hair this was one parade that will not soon be forgotten.
Finishing the parade this year was the sensational finale with 20 outfits designed and donated to the AIDS Council being shown off to great advantage on both catwalks. These sensational outfits where then uploaded onto eBay and auctioned to raise extra funds for the charity.
Each year that STYLEAID has been held, tickets have sold out well in advance with not only the very stylish and brand conscious attending but also high profile members of the community, all wanting to support the important work done by the WA AIDS Council, and to also have a great night out!
The following projects are not directly funded by the Government and each year the WA AIDS Council raises funds to ensure direct emergency care is provided to people living with HIV/AIDS and that serving today’s youth is possible.
We run a number of programs targeted at keeping our young people safe. We present information to secondary school students about HIV/AIDS, safe sex and safe drug use. We give potency to this information by having people with HIV presenting their story and some of the positive and negative experiences of having HIV.
The KISS (Keep It Safe Summer) program is run by young people, for young people and visits various locations throughout summer. With a number of chill tents at the Leavers celebration at Rottnest and Dunsborough to ensure that young people have access to proper information. They are staffed by peer educators and provide a safe place for young people to rest and revive. They also have access to information on safer sex and drug use, sexually transmitted infections, Blood Borne Viruses and sexual health services available in Perth.
The WA AIDS Council has a presence at popular youth events such as "Big Day Out" and the Fresher’s Weeks held at all the tertiary institutions to provide information and resources.
The WA AIDS Council operates a mobile needle and syringe exchange service going to 16 different locations each week. The vans are discrete and cater for all people who inject drugs.
We also provide education and prevention services in juvenile correction facilities. These young people have often had very difficult family lives and HIV/AIDS is the least of their problems. By giving them skills and knowledge we aim to prevent them from exacerbating their existing problems.
For young people growing up infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS we offer family based services, such as the annual family camp and support services for parents living with HIV so that they can better deal with the demands of their children.
This is a fund set up by the WA AIDS Council to provide financial assistance to those most in need. The purpose of this fund is to provide practical support and emergency relief to assist the many men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS maintain a basic living standard. Ironically, the good news on HIV/AIDS treatments has created a new problem. Many people with HIV/AIDS find they are unable to support themselves for the term of their illness – financially as well as emotionally – so it is vital for the WA AIDS Council to provide this support.
For example, the HIV Assistance Fund may pay a bond and required letting fee to ensure a client has suitable accommodation. Direct financial assistance may be given for the payment of Western Power, AlintaGas and Telstra accounts. Practical assistance is provided through items such as food parcels, furniture and bed linen. At present almost every third request for help from the Fund is for food parcels.
Since the introduction of Anti Retrovirals in 1997 there has been growing optimism within the HIV sector with regards to HIV becoming a chronically manageable illness with the thought that people living with HIV will be able to lead a relatively "normal" long life.
Obviously there will be a number of people that will not be able to tolerate the treatments and so will require on-going care and support. However, a significant number of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) are now beginning to look at and question their future.
With this in mind the Positive Services department has begun looking at ways in which they can assist PLWHAs to move into the new fazes of their lives. This has lead them down the path of Life Coaching. Life Coaching is a goal-oriented, results-focused professional alliance that helps clients bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be. This is done by motivating clients to stretch themselves, to look outside the square and to focus on their strengths.
The Positive Services department will initially run and evaluate a pilot Life Coaching project. If the evaluation is positive it is envisaged that this will become an on going project within the department.
In 2006 an exciting affair of sexy glamour, stunning fashion and fine dining is planned with Western Australia’s top designers previewing their 2006/2007 spring/summer collections for both men and women, which will this year include 6 of the top new emerging designers.
The talent on offer from the new design talent emerging in Western Australia saw the field expand this year to 6 designers and this promises a visual feast of cutting edge fashion from some of the best new designers around.
For the fifth year, in what has become a major part of the evening, the focus will be solely on Western Australian Designers show casing their amazing talent with some very special surprises along the way on the night!
Innovative and ground breaking are words often associated with STYLEAID and for the third time we will be presenting a finale like no other seen in Perth to date. Working within the theme of HEAVEN we will be weaving a mystical spell over our guests with a ’couture’ experience that will long be remembered.
Each of the outfits presented in the finale are donated by the designers to assist in increasing the amount of money raised on the night for the WA AIDS Council. The garments this year will be auctioned in a number of retail stores around Perth with final bidding being help ’silently’ on the night of the event.
This is the chance to grab an exclusively designed outfit from one of Perth’s top designers and also help support the AIDS Council at the same time.
STYLEAID has the support of 250 volunteers, who work for over nine months to create a night of flawless quality and sophisticated style.
In just the eight years since STYLEAID began important funds have been raised to help fund vital support programs for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS at the West Australian AIDS Council.

Glamorous, luxury yachting chic will grace StyleAID as LushLife sends heavenly creatures down the catwalk, and the essence of pure white and scarlet red will turn up the heat and deliver a message of love.
Inspired by the sheik styles of balmy film-star days off the shores of St. Tropez, Lushlife’s bikinis are barely there. Made from exquisite Italian lycras, they are hand-beaded with roses, crimsoned in delicious beading. Monokinis will grace every curve, with centerpieces of diamond-encrusted rings to glam up the mood. Shame on any girl that doesn’t own one of these this summer!

The allure of One Fell Swoop is not just in the little precious detail or the uncompromising and intriguing design. Nor is it in their method of sculpting the figure, to develop and define its natural line. The allure of One Fell Swoop is in the way the pieces blend antiquity with the contemporary; evoking memory whilst simultaneously creating it. Though one would not tell exactly what one fell swoop are, as you could always change your mind the more you see.
Chosen as one of six designers to participate in STYLEAID 2005 and 2006, and with editorial coverage in national publications including Oyster and Nylon magazine, One Fell Swoop has come into its own in 2006. At the request of Wendy Marshall owner of the Perth Boutique, Elle, the label was given the opportunity to Showcase their Haute Couture designs through instillations in the boutiques windows.
As winners of the prestigious 2005 Western Australian Mercedes-Benz Start–Up Finals, One Fell Swoop have followed in their recent success by showing at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week, launching their much anticipated debut Autumn Winter range titled, "A Question of Victoria?" Due to the positive response received from MAFW the collection "A Question Of Victoria" was selected by Karen Webster to participate in a group show at the L’Oreal Paris Fashion Festival in Melbourne.
Fantastically seductive, One Fell Swoop is a label that attempts to explore the areas in Australian Design that are little touched, by creating an aesthetic that has the history and enthusiasm of European design combined with idealism and confidence that surrounds life in contemporary Australia.
The Spring Summer collection titled Matilda’s End has its pieces as characters each created with a life and opinions. One Fell Swoop is creating pieces that you could peer inside the souls of, and making these characters in themselves worth learning about.
The Spring Summer collection is seen as falling trees, Golden, changing and organic, full of shifting moods and haunting silhouettes. Matilda’s End’s pieces focus on combining the structure of the figures natural line with free form and abstract draping, producing silhouettes that are feminine, bold and distinctive.
The signature palette is a camouflage of golden precious floral silks working harmoniously with light wool and raw organza. The cloth in it self–allowing for the creating of pieces that complement the body’s own movement and form. By referencing past design and blending it so effortlessly, One Fell Swoop’s statement is about making the maturity of classic design relevant and contemporary for the present day.
One Fell Swoop is the creation of designers Daniel Romanin, Marianna Mazzurra & Nikolina Ergic. The three graduated from the West Australian School of Art and Design in 2004, each winning awards of high distinction. A partnership was born in a modest studio on the fringe of the Perth CBD and has become home to this set of inspirational designers.
Each designer has grown up against a backdrop of strong European influences, individually developing an obsession with art & design. Their work takes inspiration from far away places and the decadent eras of art history, namely the beginning of modernism.
One Fell Swoop believes in the endless need to produce and create. The product is a collaboration of thoughts and reflections and it is their devotion to understanding the world around them that allows One Fell Swoop to create their forms.

Preacher for Woman Spring⁄Summer 07 is wrapped in decadence and luxury. A strong base of black and white in oh-so feminine shapes, with a hint of sexy cheekiness, evokes the charm of artist Aubrey Beardsley’s naughty but exquisite Art Nouveau illustrations. Belle Epoque–inspired details see lace and braid elegantly decorating yards of exotic silks and voiles – a collection of truly divine must-have dresses for the season. Boyish shorts and ballet tops and tanks complete the summer attire. A little cheeky but always nice, she is beauty incarnate.
Tough and irresistibly heroic, the Preacher man evokes images of a Che Guevara–style revolutionary. Look enviously fine in military sharp suits, shirts and trousers in crisp white, tough navy and khaki. For a relaxed look off peak, flattering short–sleeve shirts that skim the body in shades of cream and blue, team with loose Bermuda length shorts or slouchy drawstring pants. Cool cotton voiles and relaxed linens make for easy wearing all summer long, whilst detailed embroideries create striking contrasts for a commanding finish.

The new summer collection from Bim Kenesis, entitled "The Delicate Magician", is bold and playful, whilst evoking a sense of feminine charm and delicacy. Unconventional characters involved with performance and magic, inspired this third collection from head designer, Bree Kiddey.
"The Delicate Magician" is a study of silhouette, volume and colour arrangement. Cute separates and dresses incorporate plaiting and interesting, contrasting panelling. Dramatic styling and interactive elements from the world of magic, such as changeable scarves, add an eccentric undercurrent to the collection.
Silk georgettes and soft cotton voiles form the basis of the summer range. The palette includes lilacs and deep purples offset with bright fuchsias. Bold colours contrast with graphic prints of black, white and burnt orange.
Each garment in the collection was inspired by magicians’ tricks, with individual pieces taking their name from a famous illusion. The theme of the collection is followed through with clever accessories integrating magician’s knots, magic paraphernalia and motifs.

StyleAID 2006 collection:
"Often we find in man an inherent need to escape – from social conventions, spatial confines or a psychological state. For some, the need might be the result of a physiological necessity, for others a deep seated desire to take flight." Ulrich Lehmann
This escapology has never been so pertinent as in the expression of contemporary masculine identity for the urban gentleman in men’s apparel. In a median contrast to the conservatism of sombre stiff suiting and the oft–seen gregariousness of a too casual street wear style, zeitgeist design sits in the centre: neither mass produced ready–to–wear nor bespoke haute couture.
This Spring⁄Summer 06⁄07 range is inspired by Kieu’s and Troy’s wondrous travels on the cruise ships through the Caribbean from the Gulf of Mexico to South America. The colour palette is reminiscent of the port of Miami: lemonade, key lime pie and softly bronzed skin at the onset of summer. A relaxed structure and loose mode are leisurely united with frivolous print in a fresh capsule collection designed especially for this year’s StyleAID.
Stock up with these heavenly goodies, by shouting loudly and delving deeply into your pockets, for one or more of the temptations on offer by auction. Whether you wish for a stunning weekend escape or to dine out once a month for a year – this year stand up and be counted on to raise funds for StyleAID.

Like so many community based organisations here in Perth, the work we do would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.
We currently have over 150 active volunteers who work tirelessly with the WA AIDS Council. This is a drop over previous years and for the first time since the start of the HIV epidemic we need more people to come forward to assist us with the vital work we do within the Perth community.
Our volunteers receive terrific opportunities for self growth, learning and meeting new and interesting people.
We are fortunate to have great volunteers working with us but always need more to assist with the many and varied programs that the AIDS Council provides. Now more than ever it is important that we continue to have new volunteers joining our ranks. We provide comprehensive training to all volunteers who join us.
There are many opportunities to volunteer. Volunteers can help to educate the community, improve the quality of life for people living with HIV, provide support, staff the Needle and Syringe Exchange van, help with fundraising events, just to name a few of the options available.
Here at the AIDS Council we hold Volunteer Information Evenings on a regular basis. If you want to know more, visit our website www.waaids.com.

All of this to raise funds to aid the tireless work of the WA AIDS Council.
