Projects

This year STYLEAID will support a range of projects throughout the community.

The following projects are not funded by the Government and each year the WA AIDS Council raises funds to ensure direct emergency care is provided to people living with HIV/AIDS and that serving today's youth is possible.

Projects - Serving Today's Youth

We run a number of programs targeted at keeping our young people safe. We present information to secondary school students about HIV/AIDS, safe sex and safe drug use. We add credibility to this information by having people with HIV tell their story and some of the positive and negative experiences of living with HIV.

The WA AIDS Council has a presence at popular youth events such as “Big Day Out” and the Fresher's Weeks held at all the tertiary institutions to provide information and resources.

We attend the Leavers celebration at Rottnest and Dunsborough to ensure that young people have access to proper information.

The WA AIDS Council operates a mobile needle and syringe exchange service going to 16 different locations each week. The vans are discrete and cater for all people who inject drugs.

We also provide education and prevention services in juvenile correction facilities. These young people have often had very difficult family lives and HIV/AIDS is the least of their problems. By giving them skills and knowledge, our aim is to prevent them from increasing their existing problems.

For young people growing up infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS we offer family based services, such as the annual family camp and support services for parents living with HIV, so that they can better deal with the demands of parenthood.

Projects - HIV Assistance Fund

This is a fund set up by the WA AIDS Council to provide emergency financial assistance to those most in need. The purpose of this fund is to provide practical support and emergency relief to assist and maintain a basic living standard for the many men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS.

Ironically, the good news on HIV/AIDS treatments has created a new problem. Many people with HIV/AIDS find they are unable to support themselves for the term of their illness - financially as well as emotionally - so it is vital for the WA AIDS Council to provide this support.

For example, the HIV Assistance Fund may pay a bond to ensure a client has suitable accommodation. Direct financial assistance may be given for the payment of electrical, gas and telephone accounts. Practical assistance is provided through items such as food parcels, furniture and bed linen. At present almost every third request for help from the fund is for food parcels.

Projects - Life Coaching

Since the introduction of Anti Retrovirals in 1997, there has been growing optimism within the HIV sector with regards to HIV becoming a chronically manageable illness with the thought that people living with HIV will be able to lead a relatively "normal" long life.

Obviously, there will be a number of people that will not be able to tolerate the treatments and so will require ongoing care and support. However a significant number of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) are now beginning to look at and question their future.

Photographic Exhibition

After the return and outstanding success of the STYLEAID Photographic Exhibition in 2010 we will again see the highly anticipated sister event to STYLEAID return in 2011.

Each of the photographs have been generously printed by Fitzgerald Photo Labs and framed by Preservation Framers. The exhibition will be shown at the Fremantle Arts Centre and will run throughout the duration of May.

The photographs will then be displayed on the night of STYLEAID in the Grand Ballroom foyer at the Burswood Entertainment Complex for all our guests to enjoy and purchase.

2011 will see the following photographers included. They will comprise of exciting new photographers along with many returning talents from previous years.

Get Involved

Like so many other community based organisations here in Perth, the work of the WA AIDS Council would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of its volunteers.

We are fortunate to have over 150 committed and active volunteers who work tirelessly and receive terrific opportunities for self growth, learning and meeting new and interesting people.

This number has reduced in previous years and for the first time since the start of the HIV epidemic in the mid 80's we need more people to come forward and assist with the vital work we do within the Perth community.

We are always seeking more volunteers to assist us in the many and varied programs that the WA AIDS Council provides to the community. All new volunteers receive comprehensive training when joining us.

It's vital that we continue to grow our volunteer base.

There are many different opportunities to volunteer at the WA AIDS Council, including helping to educate the community, improve the quality of life and provide support for people living with HIV, staff the Needle and Syringe Exchange van or help with fundraising events - just to name a few!

Volunteer information evenings are held here at the WA AIDS Council on a regular basis. If you would like to know when the next information evening is being held, or any other information, visit our website www.waaids.com or phone (08) 9428 0000.

Beind the scenes

In the thirteen years since the inception of STYLEAID in Perth, important funds have been raised to help the vital support programmes dedicated to people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS at the WA AIDS Council.

Beind the scenes - Overview

In the thirteen years since the inception of STYLEAID in Perth, important funds have been raised to help the vital support programmes dedicated to people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS at the WA AIDS Council.

STYLEAID endeavours each year to improve on the previous years fundraising target, to keep our guests entertained and to have them coming back for more.

Last years STYLEAID Tribe saw the most media coverage in recent times, both in the lead up and post event, cementing it again as one of the most memorable and hyped events on the Perth social calendar. Local, national and international media reported on the event which included a story on New Yorks renowned Huffington Post website.

The event also saw an array of entertainment including a performance by artists The Voltaire Twins and the memorable dance piece by Link Dance Company, accompanied by the highest quality food and wine.

STYLEAID is not an event that can be thrown together in a matter of weeks, but instead takes the best part of 12 months to make it the renowned event it is today. The event catches the attention of the very stylish and brand conscious members of society along with high profile community members by supporting the important work of the WA AIDS Council.

The STYLEAID committee, along with newly appointed event coordinator Stephanie Patniotis and the WA AIDS Council, are working tirelessly to bring you a night that surpasses expectations - a true night of nights which will provide a sensory overload to all its guests and one that will remain with them long after it's over!

We ask you to sit back and enjoy the most sumptuous, luxurious, lavish and decadent event of 2011 - STYLEAID OPULENT.

The Story

Pleasure is more than a pastime for Sophia and Sebastian now, as they indulge in every whim, every desire, that their decadent minds can conjure. They want for nothing and are tempted by everything.
